Intro

Yang Yang (b. 1999, Huainan, Anhui, China) is a London-based photographic artist whose practice encompasses staged photography, serial image-making and installation. His work examines how latent conditions—including pressure, intimacy, risk, waiting and disappearance—become legible through matter, duration, distance and the gradual accumulation of information. Across his practice, fixed viewpoints, repeated sequences and constructed arrangements establish rigorous, near-clinical systems within which subtle transformations can be observed. Time operates not simply as a subject but as a method, registered through repetition, material change and the continual revision of what an image reveals.

Yang holds an MSc in Financial Risk Management from the University of Glasgow and has professional experience in audit. This background informs his sensitivity to evidence, valuation, calculation and risk, as well as to what such systems fail to register. Its analytical influence is reflected in a restrained and precisely organised visual language. Controlled lighting, a restricted palette of saturated colour, cropping and spatial intervals isolate relationships and variables, allowing photography to compare states, test perception and approach experiences that resist complete measurement.

Yang’s practice has evolved from staged psychological tableaux and object-based installations centred on intimate and interpersonal tension towards serial observations of public space. Across this expansion, the underlying enquiry remains relational: the self in relation to matter, intimacy between individuals, and the individual’s position within larger social systems. His recent work examines how architecture, advertising and routine organise visibility, proximity and collective behaviour, extending the controlled dramaturgy of the studio into the social choreography of the city. His work in theatre production and creative direction further informs his approach to staging, duration and directed attention.

Recent exhibitions include the solo exhibition The Audit of Being, Gallery 46, London (2026); Street Becomes the Scene, Wuhan Photography Art Centre, Wuhan (2026); and Material World, SWANFALL ART, London (2026).

Short Bio

Yang Yang (b. 1999, Anhui, China) is a London-based photographic artist whose practice extends into moving image and installation. Treating photography as a systematic method of observation and construction, he uses fixed viewpoints, repetition, serial structures and staged objects to examine how invisible pressures accumulate across relationships, institutions and urban life. His training in financial risk and auditing informs his attention to evidence, patterns and discrepancy. His experience in creative direction for theatre productions shapes the scenographic construction of his photographs, in which objects and spaces are arranged like actors within suspended scenes of psychological tension. In 2026, he presented the solo exhibition The Audit of Being at Gallery 46, London.

Artist Statement

My practice examines how gradual, often invisible pressures accumulate across objects, relationships and urban systems. Working across photography, moving image and installation, I use the camera as both evidence and stage: a means of observing ordinary life and of constructing conditions in which its underlying tensions can emerge. Memory, intimacy, waiting and disappearance recur throughout the work, not as isolated subjects but as forces that alter how bodies, objects and spaces relate to one another.

I often begin with a controlled situation - a fixed viewpoint, a repeated encounter, a staged arrangement or a material constraint - and attend to what changes within it. Control does not produce certainty; it makes deviation visible. A shift in light, the interval between two objects, a figure entering or leaving the frame, or the trace left by pressure can reveal what an apparently stable structure fails to contain. Observation, repetition, fragmentation and construction allow me to test the gap between systems that organise experience and emotional realities that resist measurement. My work in theatre production and creative direction also informs this process, particularly my approach to staging, duration, spatial organisation and the direction of attention.

The work moves between landscape, the interior and the city, but these are not separate lines of enquiry. Each allows me to examine how relations are structured and altered over time. Still photography suspends these relations, while moving image allows them to unfold through duration; installation brings surface, scale and the viewer’s position into the same spatial field. In landscape photographs, water, changing light, distant horizons and shadows register gradual appearance and disappearance. Printing some images on wood places the fleeting event recorded by the camera against the grain, weight and durability of its support, turning the photograph into an object with a physical relation to the viewer. In constructed images, familiar items such as cups, chains, utensils and cable ties are treated not as fixed symbols but as elements within a relational scene. Their proximity, separation, balance and restraint give physical form to dependence, vulnerability and emotional labour.

More recent work extends this enquiry into public space. Through repeated photographs of bus stops, streets and spaces of transit, I examine how architecture, advertising and systems of signage organise movement, waiting and visibility. An illuminated advertisement may remain fixed and legible while the person passing beside it becomes blurred, anonymous or partly obscured. Such moments reveal how urban systems distribute attention and structure collective behaviour: what they foreground, what they allow to recede, and how strangers may occupy the same place and follow similar rhythms while remaining socially disconnected.

Distance is therefore both a subject and a method. What appears coherent from afar may become unstable at close range, while repetition exposes variations that a single image can conceal. I retain shadows, empty intervals and incomplete information so that looking becomes an act of judgement and inference rather than passive recognition. Photography, for me, does not merely preserve what has been seen; it tests how seeing itself is organised. Through that test, I seek to make the subtle forces shaping ordinary experience temporarily perceptible.
