Distance of Intimacy
Statement
Distance of Intimacy comprises six successive crops derived from a single staged photograph of a suspended knife. The opening image contains only pale blue and red fields. A shadow then enters, followed by part of the blade, until the knife and its surrounding space are fully disclosed. Nothing within the scene changes; only the viewing distance and the amount of available information are altered.
The knife is present from the beginning, although its potential danger is not immediately legible. As the frame expands, ambiguity becomes recognition and each earlier image is retrospectively transformed. The blue surface, red boundary and doubled forms of knife and shadow hold attraction and threat within the same controlled composition.
The work treats intimacy as a question of knowledge and exposure. Proximity can produce understanding, but it can also intensify vulnerability; distance may protect, conceal or distort. Violence does not always announce itself through visible action. It can persist in silence, atmosphere and withheld information, becoming recognisable only when separate fragments are brought together.
