Swan Lake
Statement
Swan Lake consists of three nighttime photographs taken from above at the edge of a body of water. The first image holds an adult swan and a younger bird within the same dark field. In the following photographs, the younger swan appears alone, first at a distance and then close to the concrete bank. The movement is slight, yet the sequence shifts from companionship towards separation and exposure.
The title recalls the theatrical grace and choreography associated with Swan Lake, while the photographs offer an unperformed encounter. Darkness removes most of the surrounding landscape, leaving the birds, the water and a curved architectural boundary. Seen from above, the swan appears suspended within an uncertain space rather than moving through a picturesque natural scene.
The work observes transition as a quiet change in distance and belonging. One body continues after another has left the frame, while the bank suggests both a possible destination and a limit. Within the surrounding darkness, growing apart becomes a small but visible movement.
