Tick Lock
Statement
Tick Lock brings together two connected groups of photographs. One is staged: a bird is enclosed within a cage, while a pocket watch is restrained by a chain and covered by the cage’s shadow. The other emerged while I was preparing for exams, photographing seagulls from my desk through window blinds as they flew, paused and disappeared across a sky divided into vertical frames.
Both groups repeat similar structures of enclosure. Cage bars, chains, blinds and the photographic frame divide and restrict space. Birds represent freedom, yet repeatedly appear within these boundaries. The pocket watch and the sky offer two ways of experiencing time: one measured by a clock, the other felt through movement, waiting and change.
One group constructs confinement; the other finds it in everyday life. In the observational photographs, the seagulls are outside in the open sky while I remain behind the blinds. The relationship is reversed: the bird is free, while the observer looks out from inside the frame.
The work extends this idea of enclosure from space to time. Life is always situated within time: we can move, pause and choose, but we cannot step outside it. Photography creates another frame, capturing one moment from time as it keeps moving forward. Among countless possible paths, the photograph keeps the one that was actually lived.
