Measured Air

Statement

Measured Air follows a blue balloon from a fixed viewpoint as it slowly loses air, changing from a full, tense form into a collapsed skin. The camera position and surrounding light remain largely constant, while the balloon gradually shrinks, falls and changes shape. Rather than recording a sudden event, the series observes how small changes accumulate through time.

The balloon functions as both subject and measure. Air is invisible, yet its presence becomes visible through volume, tension and form. As it escapes, time also becomes perceptible through the changing material state of the balloon. The differences between individual photographs may be slight, but across the sequence they reveal a continuous process of change.

The fixed frame makes this transformation more apparent. The surrounding space appears still while pressure decreases, volume disappears and the balloon slowly alters its relationship to light, shadow and gravity. In this way, the object becomes a quiet timekeeper, measuring duration through the gradual loss of what it contains.

The work is not simply about the life cycle of a balloon, but about how ordinary materials can register the passage of time. Neither air nor time can be seen directly; both become perceptible through the changes they leave behind. Measured Air gives temporary form to these invisible processes, recording disappearance as a slow and material event.
